Statistics

NovaScriber offers several insights in your scenes, chapters and your project as a whole, from word count, to a break down of general readability of your documents, chapters and stories.

Click on the word count in the left bottom corner on the editor to open the statistics panel.

(Cumulative) word count over time

The graph in the top half shows the (cumulative) word count of your content, over time.

Note: the word count in NovaScriber is based on a different method than used by MS Word. On average, we find a difference between Word and NovaScriber of roughly twenty to fifty words per ten thousand.

Mouse over: individual graph

Mouse over the area underneath each line to see the progress and the name of a specific document or chapter in the chart.

Words in dialogs

NovaScriber counts the number of words enclosed by markers used for dialogs (quotes, double quotes, square brackets). This total is then divided by the total word count of that chapter, scene or document.

Unique words (documents and scenes only)

For each scene and document, NovaScriber counts the number of unique words. This gives you some indication of repetition and range of vocabulary used in your work.

Names and terms

NovaScriber assumes that each capitalized word within your sentences is either a word or a term. (These terms can be converted to items describing people, places, objects and so on, using the side bar.)

Sentences, paragraphs, dialog parts

Based on simple rules (sentences are closed by periods, exclamation marks or question marks, followed by a space), NovaScriber makes a count of the number of sentences, paragraphs and the number of parts of those paragraphs which are probably dialogs.

Average words per sentence and paragraph

Finally, NovaScriber provides a total average of words spread over sentences and paragraphs, giving you some insight of readabilty.

“Reading weight”

The “reading weight” gives you some indication of “the amount of effort” it takes to read your work, based on the total average of words per sentence. Below you’ll find an overview:

Word count per sentenceReading weight
5 words or lessVery light
10 words or lessLight
30 words or lessMedium
More than 30 wordsAcademic / heavy

Distribution of sentence length

To understand what the distribution is of sentences between a certain length, NovaScriber provides a bar chart with counter per specific range. In the example provided in the screenshot above, you can see that several sentences in the manuscript are longer than 100 words, but most sentences count roughtly 5 to 15 words.

Mouse over each bar in the bar chart to see the exact count, according to NovaScriber.

Project wide refresh

By default, NovaScriber analyses every document on load and save. To refresh the entire project statistischs, click on the “reload” icon next to “Statistics”. Based o nthe size of your project and where you host it (local drive or on a network location) this can take several seconds.
