March 31 – critical bug fix, word count per paragraph
Fixes
- Critical bug: Documents could not be stored after intense editing – Our new functionality for version control on paragraphs would lead to copies of the same version of a paragraph, leading to a file larger than 48MB and larger than the backend part allowed to store. This has been fixed.
Improvements
- Word count visible per paragraph. NovaScriber now displays how many words you have written unitl and including your current paragrpah, and how many words are counted in that paragrpah itself. This is added to simplyfy working on technical stuff like placing and spacing beats and pulses in your document, based on word count.
January 28 – bug fixes
Fixes
- Stringing words together. Due to the use of <var> tags to separate words, the editor got confused in reformatting text after removing Intalics, stringing all words togeter. This has been fixed by using <span>
- No updates on new linked elements. The right-side pangel did not update after adding links to the current document due to incomplete updates of the view in the new code.

December 30 – intermediate version
In the December 30 release, we worked on some performance-hogs and improved the overall project and document analysis. We separated the list state and the project metadata from the project structure, to remove overhead while switching between documents.
Fixes
- In some cases, documents were not loading due to a null-reference error: blocking the entire project. This error was probably introduced in the rewrites done for the November / early December release.
Improvements
- Reduction of overhead: the project state and the project meta data are now saved as separate files from the project structure. This leads to reduced overhead (the size of project structures can easily grow to 1.5 GB and more on big projects). When working from network drives, this also increases speed in switching between documents.
- Better protection against accidental overwrites: by blocking the project tree until documents and document data are fully loaded.
- Document and chapter statistics can be refreshed on project level and show better result on imported content (Word, Scrivener). Mouse over the area of a graph will show the title of that chapter or scene, plus the chart for that specific document, giving you a better insight in what you produced for that specific part of your manuscript.
November 26, December 5
The November 26, December 5 release introduces new features to visualize elements of your story, chapters and scenes in the shape of drawings (maps) and diagrams. We also fixed some errors.
Fixes
- Switching between documents could lead to text-loss or “leakage” of text from one document to another. We secured some vulnerabilities in the code on loading text and were not able to reproduce it afterwards.
- Backup-files were not shown due to some changes.
Improvements
- We enabled drag and drop in the chapter-matrix, improved the design and added items in the context menu to open the summaries and the editor for each item.
- Images in export-documents (Word) are better managed and images pasted in documents are saved as files, solving several issues, including the growing size of backups.
- Improved speed in text comparisons, due to a new library. Where the comparison of large texts could freeze the application for several seconds, this now hardly takes more than one second. (Tested with documents of roughly 10.000 words)
Removals
- We removed the Graph– and Mindmap-functionality in exchange for something that is more towards what we intended (see “New features”). One of the reasons was that both tools caused an “overflow” on event listeners.
New features
- You can now crop your own thumbnails, using the new cropping tool. This gives you more control over things.
- Visualization: we added new functionality to visualize what is going on in your chapters, scenes and story in freehand style and in diagram style. This allows you to map and annotate relationships between elements by no more than a few mouse clicks. The Freehand-editor offers several pre-baked images to create maps and visualizations.
September 17
The September 17 release contains several fixes on minor bugs and an improvement on the time-line matrix, so that all time-related elements in your project can be placed on your time line as well.
Fixes
- Switching from timeline-view to text-view would freeze the application (due to an unintended loop in presenting the chapter and scene-cards and a missing null-check on a parameter in the Document Nodes)
Improvements
- Timeline-view now include all time/date related plotting-elements, including (but not limited to): plot points, conflicts, flash backs, timeline-items and everything under the “Heroes journey” option in the context menu.
September 12
The release of September 12 was a big-bang release with a focus on text analysis, text-translation and spellcheck. We made several bug-fixes, created a revision of the “visualization engine” for spell-errors and text analysis, an explicit exposure of “hidden features” and added several new features to make the software even more awesome.
Fixes:
- Issues with Chapter-, Timeline and matrix views (did not render properly)
- Issues with import of Scrivener projects (application got stuck)
- Issues with publishing and publish-popup (design broken. Errors occurring in pristine project due to missing publish-definitions)
Improvements:
- Text analysis: highlight of repetitive words, based on frequency. Visualization of word– and sentence-lengths based on specific ranges in steps of 5, 10 and 20 words.
- Highlight of terms and checkmark when definitions with matching names are linked to the document
- Spellcheck, as soon as you move to the next paragraph.
- The option to add more Hunspell dictionaries in a specified directory
- Switches in footer of editor to show / hide analysis and spelling-errors
- Reporting on word-count over time, on ferequency of sentences in specific length-ranges (in steps of 5 words)
- Integration of Google Translate, and the implementation of a second editor-panel with synchronized content for manual and autmated translate
- Implementation of colorpickers and styles to personalize NovaScriber
- Focus on a cleaner interface.
- Improvents on Focus mode, in relationship to the results of the different types of text analysis
- The option to show and hide input for time period and graphs and the option to switch between inputs for summary, “things to do” and “purpose of this scene / chapter“
August 30, 2020
Fixes:
- Timeline in the green overview did not show documents due to a breaking change in the code.
Improvements:
- Document styling has been revamped and updated to give you more control over the output without the need to be a CSS-code wizard, and a better preview of what your design will look like in Word and on your e-reader.
- Actions have been moved to their own tab in the project tree area, to make them more accessible when you are working in big projects
August 4, Beta 2.03
Fixes:
- Publishing documents from the dropdown in the Document Control center is now working again
Improvements:
- Additions to the “Show Info” block for better insight, including: all images in that section; a report with the outline, time line and summaries on chapters and scenes of that section; a preview of the output document; an overview of all research, all notes and all text in the paste bin on that section; plus a publish-section to immediately publish that segment to epub and Word.
July 23, Beta 2.02
Fixes:
- Issues on startup: In some situations, NovaScriber would not start at all
Improvements
Copy & paste
- Right click on a paragraph in a backup or a preview in the split screen will give you the “copy” option. The entire paragraph is copied as clear text. Markup (bold, italics, etc) is dropped
Decide what document will show in a popup
- Go to “Settings” and the “popup” tab. There you can now select which document in your project tree should be opened in a popup, or in the editor next to the tree, giving you more control.
June 25, Beta 2.01
Fixes:
- Project tree: when a chapter is selected, all underlying content “disappears” from the tree.
- Related items: when related items are added, they do not always show up
Improvements
Info block, graphs on buildup
- To allow you to see what happens elsewhere, we added an info-block per document, allowing you to see a summary of everything related to a specific chapter, scene or document. Right-click on the item in the project tree, select “info” and there it is.
- To help you visualize what is happening inside a chapter of scene. we added a graphical representation of the buildup on four aspects: mood, determination, action and tension.
June 04, Beta 1.03
Fixes:
Project tree
- Proper update on newly created items: fix of bug caused on May 23.
