I created NovaScriber out of a need to keep better track on all kind of elements related to my own writing. Needs Scrivener did not cover.
When NovaScriber started to supercede Scrivener in several useful aspects, I opened this wordpress site, created an installer, put everyting online and created an entry about NovaScriber on “AlternativesTo”.
About the business model
Because it is silly not to, I contemplated several business models before I put the first beta-version online, and decided to keep it simple and offer a free product and the option to support the project via Patreon.
About the potential
I think NovaScriber is awesome. If not, I would not have placed it online now, while it is still very much a work in progress.
I think, with all the features in place and working as intended, NovaScriber might have some potential as a commercial product, and there are several ways to make that work (using corporate licence models for instance) while keeping NovaScriber free for private use.
I am hesitant, though, to go that road, as this will add more distractions and is very much about timing. My prime concern now is the software itself.

- Make the software as awesome as I can: very useful, very user friendly, very pleasant to work with, with all things there to do your writing and planning and to keep track on people, places, plot points and more.
- Make sure it is as problem-free as possible: by testing, bug-fixing and responding to feedback and bug reports from users
- Make sure people can find, download and install it
- Invite people –via the app– to donate on Patreon
- Repeat from step 1
The download and install process
I know this is not ideal yet with all the warnings and hoops you have to jump through. I do have the intention to ease this out by signing the software and use a better source than Google Drive to download from. For now, getting the software to the next level is a higher priority.

Much of the success of an application depends on the community. If nobody is talking or writing or youtubing about it, a product does not exist.
